[01] Commission provides €300 million to PEGASE and UNRWA in fulfilment
of its Paris Pledge to support the Palestinian people
As of today, the European Commission makes available €300 million to
finance activities under both the PEGASE mechanism (€229 million) and to
UNRWA (€71 million) to support Palestine refugees. PEGASE activities
support the Palestinian Authority's Reform and Development Plan in the
areas of Governance, Social Development, Economic and Private Sector
Development, and Public Infrastructure. Support to UNRWA includes the EC's
regular contribution to the general budget (€66 million), as well as
support to UNRWA's Special Hardship Cases scheme for the most vulnerable
refugees.
Rediffusion
[02] Statement by Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn following the meeting
of President Christofias and Mr Talat in Nicosia on 21 March 2008
"The European Union welcomes the successful meeting between the two leaders
and their agreement to take full responsibility for the future conduct of
the negotiations. I commend their decision to meet again in three months'
time to review the work of the working groups and technical committees and,
using their results, start full-fledged negotiations under the auspices of
the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The EU stands ready to support
the negotiations and both parties. I also congratulate the leaders on the
important symbolic decision to open the Ledra Street crossing forty-four
years after it was closed. The Commission has made more than 100.000 euros
available to UNDP to carry out works at the crossing point. I look forward
to walking across the Green Line at Ledra Street myself in the near
future."
