  • [01] Commissioner Hübner launches regional programme for Yorkshire and The Humber (England)

    Danuta Hübner, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, today launches a seven-year development programme for the United Kingdom's Yorkshire and The Humber region. She attends the ceremony at the invitation of the regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, and will sign programme documents with John Healey MP, Minister of State in the Department for Communities and Local Government. She will also meet John Prescott MP, former British Deputy Prime Minister, to discuss the UK's application for European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) support following last year's disastrous floods.

    [02] Commission adopts 5th Report on Union Citizenship

    Today the European Commission adopted its fifth report on citizenship of the European Union. The report assesses the application of the rights conferred on Union citizens by the Treaty establishing the European Community during the period 1 May 2004 to 30 June 2007.

    [03] Changement climatique: l'adoption rapide des propositions de la Commission par le Conseil et le Parlement européen contribuera la réalisation des objectifs de Kyoto

    L'adoption rapide par le Conseil et le Parlement européen de la série de propositions législatives présentées par la Commission en matière de lutte contre le changement climatique peut aider l'Union européenne atteindre les objectifs de réduction des émissions de gaz effet de serre qu'elle s'est fixés en vertu du Protocole de Kyoto. C'est ce qu'a déclaré aujourd'hui M. Stavros Dimas, membre de la Commission européenne chargé de l'environnement, en évoquant le troisième anniversaire de l'entrée en vigueur du protocole, qui sera célébré demain.

    [04] La Commission adopte des recommandations en vue de l'ouverture de négociations d'accords d'exemption de visa avec six pays tiers

    La Commission a fait aujourd'hui le premier pas en vue de la conclusion d'accords d'exemption de visa de court séjour entre la Communauté européenne et six pays tiers (Antigua-et-Barbuda, les Bahamas, la Barbade, Maurice, Saint-Christophe-et-Nevis et les Seychelles). Ces recommandations en vue d'autoriser la Commission ouvrir les négociations vont être transmises au Conseil.

    [05] Euro area external trade surplus € 28.3 billion

    The first estimate for the euro area (EA13) trade balance with the rest of the world in December 2007 gave a € 4.2 billion deficit, compared with € +2.4 billionn in December 2006. The November 2007 balance was €+ 3.0 bn, compared with € +5.3 bn in November 2006. In December 2007 compared with November 2007, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 2.5% while imports rose by 0.7%. The first estimate for the December 2007 extra-EU27 trade balance was a deficit of € 17.9 billion, compared with € -10.1 billion in December 2006. In November 2007, the balance was € -16.8 billion, compared with € -12.3 billion in November 2006. In December 2007 compared with November 2007, seasonally adjusted exports fell by 4.0% and imports by 0.7%. During 2007, euro area trade recorded a surplus of € 28.3 billion euro, compared with € -9.3 billion in 2006. The EU27 recorded a deficit of € 185.7 billion in 2007, compared with € -192.1 billion in 2006. These data are released by Eurostat.

    [06] Commission clears acquisition of NIS by KKR

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Northgate Information Solutions (NIS) of the UK by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co, L.P. (KKR) of the US. KKR is a private equity investment company. NIS provides software, outsourcing and information technology services to the human resources, local government, education and public safety market sectors. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
