    [01] Role of local, regional authorities crucial in facing challenges of globalisation, HĂĽbner tells brainstorming on future of regional policy

    The role of local and regional authorities will be ever more crucial in facing the challenges of globalisation, Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta HĂĽbner said today. Speaking at a conference in Seville entitled 'What future for regional policies after 2013?' she said the EU's cohesion policy was playing an essential role in addressing these challenges, and that local and regional authorities' had a vital part to play in tailoring policies to each region's needs.

    [02] European Commission makes computer-assisted translation easier and more accessible

    The European Commission is going a step further in its efforts to foster multilingualism as a key part of European unity in diversity. The Commission's collection of about 1 million sentences and their high quality translations in 22 of the 23 official EU languages — including those of the new Member States — is the biggest ever collection in so many languages and is now freely available. This kind of data is highly sought after by developers of machine translation systems in which automatic translation software "learns" from manually translated texts how words and phrases are correctly and contextually translated. The data can also help the development of other linguistic software tools such as grammar and spell checkers, online dictionaries and multilingual text classification systems.

    [03] La Commissaire Ferrero-Waldner à Rabat pour des réunions avec les pays du Maghreb

    Benita Ferrero-Waldner, la Commissaire européenne chargée des relations extérieures et de la politique européenne de voisinage, se rendra du 20 au 22 janvier à Rabat pour participer à différentes réunions rassemblant les pays du Maghreb (Algérie, Libye, Maroc, Mauritanie et Tunisie). Lundi 20 janvier, la commissaire participera à la réunion des Ministres des Affaires Etrangères du groupe 5+5 et au séminaire de haut niveau sur le “Statut Avancé” demandé par le Maroc dans ses relations avec l’Union européenne. Mardi 22 janvier, Ferrero-Waldner participera à la réunion de la Troika de l’Union européenne avec les Ministres des Affaires Etrangères de l’Union du Maghreb Arabe (UMA), en présence du Secrétaire Général de cette organisation.

    [04] Environnement: quatre-vingt dix pour cent des Européens considèrent que la diminution de la diversité biologique constitue un problème

    D'après une enquête Eurobaromètre relative aux attitudes face à la biodiversité, une majorité écrasante d'Européens estiment que la diminution de la diversité biologique est un problème grave. L'enquête met en évidence les préoccupations des Européens en ce qui concerne le déclin et la disparition des espèces animales et végétales, des habitats naturels et des écosystèmes. C'est en Grèce, au Portugal et en Roumanie que les citoyens se sont montrés le plus préoccupés. L'enquête révèle également que les Européens s'inquiètent davantage de la diminution de la biodiversité au niveau mondial que dans leur propre pays.

    [05] Commission clears acquisition of Trametal and Spartan by Metinvest

    The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Trametal SpA of Italy and Spartan UK Ltd. by Metinvest BV of The Netherlands. Metinvest is active in coal and iron ore mining and steel production, including hot-rolled flat steel (such as coils and quarto plates). Trametal and Spartan produce hot- rolled flat steel, specifically quarto plates. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
