[03] Member States have presented their second annual Lisbon Implementation Reports

Member States have now presented their second annual implementation reports on their national reform programmes under the Lisbon Growth and Jobs Strategy. After assessing them, the Commission will present its own Strategic Report on 11 December 2007, with proposals to the Spring European Council on how to adapt and pursue the Lisbon Strategy to realise Europe's full potential for sustainable growth and jobs. Following up the Commission's paper "The European Interest: succeeding in the age of globalisation", the December Report will propose actions to intensify the pace of reform, build on the progress made and further mobilise the external dimension of the Lisbon strategy so that Europe can maintain its openness and seek openness from others. The Report will assess Member States' progress on complying with the country specific recommendations for reform endorsed by the 2007 Spring European Council. It will pinpoint new areas where action is needed and will be complemented by a renewed Community Lisbon Programme for action at EU level. The national reports are available via: <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/growthandjobs/key/nrp2007_en.htm">http://ec.europa.eu/growthandjobs/key/nrp2007_en.htm

[04] Strengthening co-operation in civil and commercial matters with Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland

On 30 October 2007, the new Lugano Convention on jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters between the EC and certain EFTA Member States, in particular Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland will be signed.

[06] Commissioner Kyprianou to promote healthy eating to European children

On 8 November 2007, Commissioner for Health Markos Kyprianou will take part in the "European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking", an initiative with events in several European countries aimed at teaching children the pleasure and benefits of a healthy diet. This event, which has been co- organised by the European Commission and the European Chefs' Association (Euro-toques), will involve top-level chefs meeting with school children (either in schools or restaurants) to explain to them in a fun way how to cook and eat healthily. Commissioner Kyprianou will visit the European School in Ixelles, Brussels, where 60 children of various nationalities will participate in workshop demonstrations on how to prepare nutritious, balanced and tasty meals. Similar workshops with national chefs will also take place in several other European countries (see MEMO/07/442). Childhood obesity is a rapidly growing problem, with nearly 22 million overweight or obese children in Europe today. In addition to the health and social problems that obesity can cause for children, there are also serious long- term consequences, as obese children generally remain obese in adulthood. This puts them at high risk for serious conditions such as heart disease, type-2 diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and certain types of cancer. The European Day of Healthy Food and Cooking is part of the Commission's broader campaign to tackle obesity and encourage EU citizens to choose a balanced lifestyle.

[07] Commissioner Kyprianou visits USA to discuss health and food safety

Markos Kyprianou, Commissioner for Health, will visit the United States from 31 October to 4 November. Mr Kyprianou will meet US Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt, US Trade Representative Susan C. Schwab and acting Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Conner amongst others. He will use the trip to discuss a broad range of issues with his US counterparts including sanitary and phytosanitary measures for traded products, and the issue of influenza virus sharing for the benefit of public health on both sides of the Atlantic. On 2 November, the Commissioner will take part in the Eighth Ministerial of the Global Health Security Initiative (GHSI) in Washington. The GHSI was set up in 2001 as an international partnership to strengthen the protection of human health globally, particularly with regard to biological threats (both natural and malicious). Commissioner Kyprianou will present the Commission's Green Paper on Biosecurity (see IP/07/1065) which launched an EU-wide consultation on how to reduce biological risks. He will stress the need to increase international cooperation when it comes to developing preparedness and response to threats to food safety. Delegates at the GHSI will also look at risk assessment and preparedness in relation to infectious diseases in the context of international travel.
