The French-Brazilian filmmaker Walter Salles will be the patron of this 5th Europe Day.[03] New Commission Decision creates a single reference point for uniform EU radio spectrum informationRadio spectrum users will soon benefit from greater clarity on what spectrum is available and how this may be used across Europe. Such information helps industry to make informed decisions when developing business opportunities, and so will stimulate investment. It is also essential for secondary trading of rights to use spectrum, which is also a Commission objective. The Decision, adopted today, builds on existing requirements in the EU Telecom Rules and defines a common format and level of detail for information that Member States should provide.[04] Towards a comprehensive European Migration Policy: Cracking down on employment of illegal immigrants and fostering circular migration and mobility partnershipsThe European Commission is determined to tackle the pull factor for illegal immigrants created by employers providing illegal work. Today it presented a proposal for a Directive on sanctions against such employers. This is part of a comprehensive European Migration policy which supports legal migration, fights illegal migration, builds cooperation with Third Countries and works with the development agenda. [09] Joe Borg at MedTrade conference in ValettaTomorrow, Joe Borg, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, will give a key note address to the fifth MedTrade Conference, in Malta. In his speech, entitled "a Maritime Policy for the Union: Opportunities for the Mediterranean", Commissioner Borg will say that "as a vital component of Europe's economy, both in it own right and as a link in the chain of the international trade on which Europe's prosperity depends, shipping merits – and is getting – much attention." Underlining the need to approach all our maritime activities in a coherent and comprehensive manner under a Maritime Policy, Dr Borg will point out that "shipping can only gain from such a strong emphasis on Europe's maritime dimension." Making the industry more attractive to young and skilled workers, the development of marine clusters and the need to balance growth and the protection of the marine environment as the resource base of this growth will be among the themes that the Commissioner will raise in his speech. On the need to ensure the sustainability of shipping and other maritime activities, Dr Borg will say that "Combining cutting-edge technology with political will can render the economy and ecology mutually reinforcing." He will encourage conference participants to respond to the consultation that the Commission launched last June on the basis of a Green Paper on a future Maritime Policy for the Union. This year-long consultation comes to a close at the end of next month. On Friday, Commissioner Borg will meet with the Maltese Parliament Foreign and European Affairs Committee for a wide-ranging debate on the move towards a European Maritime Policy.[10] RĂ©diffusion[11] Commission welcomes new Declaration on Equality between women and menCommenting today at the informal meeting of ministers for gender equality and family affairs in Bad Pyrmont (Germany), VladimĂr Ĺ pidla, EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities welcomed the discussions saying "If Europe is to meet its economic, social and demographic challenges, equality between women and men has to be the starting point. Recent success in the EU's labour market performance is largely thanks to more women joining the workforce. We are seeing that, in countries where women participate actively in all aspects of economic, social and political life, well established work-home reconciliation policies are the norm - these are also the countries where women and men have, on average, more children". Following the first session of the two- day meeting, Commissioner Ĺ pidla added, "The Commission especially welcomes the Team Presidency declaration from Germany, Portugal and Slovenia, on equality. It sets out a concrete work programme for the next 18 months based on Member States' commitments to the 2005 Gender Equality Pact and will contribute to the European Commission's Roadmap for Equality between men and women". The main areas for discussion over the two day event will focus on the changes in perceptions of women and men as role models and the challenges this brings about. The meeting will also deal with how to strengthen strategic alliances with the economy so as to promote better reconciliation between work, private and family life, while promoting equal opportunities for women and men in the workplace. Other issues on the discussion table will include the progress of women, as well as of men who are active fathers, in reaching management positions and how to provide more support for migrant women and children. The meeting is an opportunity for the German Presidency to report on the new “European Alliance for Families” as called for by the Spring European Council last March.
