[01] Making the internet safer for children: Europe calls for determined
action on "Safer Internet Day" 2007
Today, 100 organisations in over 40 countries worldwide celebrate Safer
Internet Day. In the EU, across all 27 Member States conferences and
campaigns showcase already existing safer internet activities of the
private and the public sector, from filtering technologies to media
literacy programmes. The purpose is to raise awareness – in particular at
schools, among parents and teachers – about the best ways for protecting
minors in an online environment of growing importance for our daily lives.
Safer Internet Day is organised under the patronage of the Information
Society and Media Commissioner Viviane Reding.
[02] Commission study points the way forward for better regulation of new
media and the digital economy
In a rapidly evolving digital world, self- and co-regulatory models can be
attractive alternatives to traditional regulations, according to a study
for the European Commission presented today on Europe's "Safer Internet
Day".
[03] Mobile operators agree on how to safeguard children using mobile
phones
Leading European mobile operators today signed in Brussels an agreement on
how to protect minors using mobile phones. This agreement, brokered by the
European Commission, responds to the findings of the Commission's public
consultation on child safety and mobile phones published today. In the
agreement, mobile operators undertake to develop self-regulatory codes by
February 2008.
[04] Food Quality Schemes under the Microscope
The future of quality certification schemes, their functioning in the
internal market as well as their benefits and potential were examined and
discussed by stakeholders and experts at the Conference "Food Quality
Certification – Adding Value to Farm Produce" in Brussels, 5-6 February
2007. The conference brought together stakeholders and representatives of
all interested parties. It follows a 2-year "Food Quality Schemes" pilot
project undertaken by the Commission's research arm, the JRC.
[05] European Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik chairs first ever EU-
India Ministerial Meeting on Science
European Science and Research Commissioner, Janez Potočnik, will make his
first official visit to India on 7-9 February, with events in Delhi and
Ahmedabad. While there, he will co-chair the first ever meeting of EU and
India science ministers and participate in the EU-India Science Icons
meeting, with the President of India, plus 500 Indian science students.
Commissioner Potočnik will also inaugurate a workshop on climate change
research, and visit India's premier fusion energy research facility.
[06] December 2006 compared to December 2005 - Volume of retail trade up by
2.1% in euro area; Up by 3.3% in EU25
According to Eurostat, in December 2006, compared to December 2005, the
volume of retail trade grew by 2.1% in the euro area and by 3.3% in the
EU25. Compared to November 2006, the retail sales index rose by 0.3% in the
euro area and by 0.7% in the EU25. The average volume of retail trade index
for 2006, compared to 2005, increased by 1.4% in the euro area and by 2.4%
in the EU25.
[07] Commission clears acquisition of Stamptec by voestalpine
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Stamptec Holding GmbH
(Stamptec) of Germany by voestalpine AG of Austria. voestalpine
manufactures and sells steel products. Stamptec manufactures and sells
pressed metal parts and components. The operation was examined under the
simplified merger review procedure.
