[01] General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean builds on last
year's progress towards sustainability in the region
The European Commission has welcomed the measures adopted by the General
Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) to promote sustainable
fisheries and aquaculture in the region at its annual general meeting, in
Rome, last week. The Commission, on behalf of the Union, led the process
that will offer greater protection to fisheries resources, improve the
application of existing measures, enhance the development of reproductive
aquaculture, continue to support the regional projects and develop new
initiatives to increase cooperation in fisheries management in the Black
Sea. This will be made possible thanks to the decisions that will now
secure the administrative and budgetary basis of the GFCM making it fully
operational.
[03] Commission approves proposed acquisition of Ingman Foods by Arla
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the
proposed acquisition of Ingman Foods, a Finnish supplier of dairy products,
by the Swedish company Arla. After examining the operation, the Commission
concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective
competition in the European Economic Area or any substantial part of it.
[04] Janez Potočnik makes first official visit to Israel (17-18/01)
European Science & Research Commissioner Janez Potočnik will make his
first official visit to Israel on 17 and 18 January. Israel has been a
fully associated member of the EU's research funding programmes since 1996
and both the EU and Israel have benefited from this partnership. During his
visit, Commissioner Potočnik will meet members of the Israeli government
and will attend a conference on Israel's participation in the EU's research
programme FP7 at Bar Ilan University. He will also meet with
representatives of the Israel academic and business communities. His
discussions with Israel will focus on ongoing negotiations to finalise
Israel's association to FP7, and highlighting the importance of research as
an element of the overall EU-Israel relationship.
[05] Commission holds informal meeting on bird hunting in Malta (17/01)
Tomorrow in Brussels the European Commission is hosting an informal meeting
with the Maltese authorities regarding bird hunting in Malta. The
Federation of Associations for Hunting and Conservation of the EU (FACE),
the Maltese Hunting Federation (FKNK- FACE Malta), Birdlife International
and Birdlife Malta have been invited to participate in this meeting as
observers. The meeting is intended to clarify the provisions of the EU's
1979 Birds Directive regarding three specific aspects related to bird
hunting in Malta: the hunting of birds during their spring migration; the
trapping of certain bird species; and the illegal shooting of birds. The
meeting is in line with the EU's Sustainable Hunting Initiative, which
favours dialogue and conflict resolution between hunting and nature
protection organisations. Since signing a 2004 Agreement on sustainable
hunting at EU level, FACE and Birdlife have been the key contacts of the
Commission in the context of correct implementation of the hunting
provisions under EU law.
