[01] Animal welfare in transport: new EU rules enter into force
The new Regulation on animal welfare in transport enters into force
tomorrow, 5 January 2007. European Health Commissioner Markos Kyprianou
said: "This important animal welfare legislation aims to reduce the stress
and harm that animals can experience during land and sea journeys. Among
the new safeguards for animals being introduced today are higher standards
for vehicles and equipment, and stricter requirements for those dealing
with animals in transport. The Regulation also provides for measures to
ensure the better enforcement of EU rules in this area, such as the use of
satellite navigation systems."
[02] The Gas Coordination Group evaluates the recent Russian-Belarus gas
dispute
At the request of Commissioner Piebalgs, the Gas Coordination Group met
today to assess the reliability of gas supply through Belarus after the
last-minute agreement signed between Gazprom and Belarus on 31 December
2006. The Group assessed the agreement positively and stressed the
importance of a consolidated and stable multi-annual agreement to secure
gas transit through Belarus. For the first time a Belarussian
representative was invited to the meeting
