  • [01] Clearing and settlement : Competition and Internal Market Commissioners will act unless there is further action from industry

Unless market players come forward with effective and realistic changes to improve the clearing and settlement (C/S) of securities in the EU, the European Commissioners for Competition and the Internal Market intend to propose action on the basis of EU competition and single market rules before the summer break. The current fragmented national monopolies in trading infrastructures such as exchanges, clearinghouses and securities depositaries, create high costs for the EU economy and represent significant impediments to efficient cross-border trading in the EU. The securities Industry needs to accelerate work on removing a number of barriers significantly, and provide a firm timetable for change.

[03] International Women's Day Conference 2006 : Women and Men, Building Equality Together

Why speak about men on a day that is supposed to be dedicated to women ? The subject chosen this year for the annual staff lunchtime conference organised by the Commission to celebrate International Women's Day is the role of women and of men in the construction and implementation of an equal opportunities policy. Because, on the one hand, it is not possible to continue developing an equal opportunities policy without involving men in the process, and, on the other hand, because this policy concerns and benefits them too. Mr José Manuel Barroso, President of the Commission will deliver the opening speech of this conference, chaired by Vice- President Siim Kallas, Vice-President and Commissioner in charge of administrative affairs. Other speakers include Catherine Day, Secretary General of the Commission, Lissy Gröner, member of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament, Waqar Azmi, Chief Diversity Adviser to the British Government, Anne-Marie Devreux, Sociologist, and Lars Jalmert, former member of the Swedish Council of Work Life Research.

[04] European business : a portrait of EU industrial and service activities - new comprehensive statistical panorama of European business

The new edition of European business - facts and figures, published by Eurostat, gives a comprehensive picture of the structure, development and characteristics of European business and its different activities : from energy and the extractive industries to communications, information services and media. It presents the latest available statistics from a wide selection of statistical sources describing for each activity production and employment, country specialisation and regional distribution, productivity and profitability, the importance of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), work-force characteristics, external trade, etc.
