  • [01] EU and Canada sign agreement on the transfer of air passenger data

An agreement on the transfer of air passenger data will be signed today between the EU and Canada. Under the agreement, airlines flying from the EU to Canada will transfer selected passenger data to the Canadian authorities to help identify passengers who could be a security threat. The agreement strikes a good balance between security requirements and the data protection standards required under EU and Canadian law, thus making an important contribution to the fight against terrorism. It was signed in Luxembourg, in the margins of the EU's General Affairs and External Relations Council, by United Kingdom Minister for Europe Douglas Alexander for the Presidency, Commissioner for External Relations, and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and Ambassador Jeremy Kinsman of the Canadian Mission to the EU.

[02] Signature of a memorandum of understanding on the creation of an EU- Russia Transport Dialogue

Today, Jacques Barrot, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of transport, and the Minister for Transport of the Russian Federation, Igor Levitin, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the creation of an EU- Russia Transport Dialogue. This new dialogue provides for a regular exchange on EU-Russia transportation and infrastructure links. The Dialogue will be structured around five specific Working Groups : transport strategies and public-private partnership (PPP) ; transport security ; air transport ; maritime, sea-river and inland waterway transport ; and road and rail transport.

[03] Biggest ever EU-Russia Industrialists' Round Table gives practical advice to political leaders on how to create the "Common Economic Space" with Russia

On 3 October, on the eve of the EU's Summit with Russia, the EU-Russia Industrialists' Round Table (IRT) met in London to discuss how business can contribute to the creation of the planned Common Economic Space between the EU and Russia. The largest ever meeting of the Round Table adopted joint conclusions, which were presented to the Summit, advising on priority actions which should be taken in the fields of energy, telecommunications, information technologies and space, transport, forestry, construction and financial services.

[04] Commission deplores tragic events in Ceuta and Melilla

The European Commission deeply regrets the tragic events in Ceuta and Melilla which led to the untimely death of several persons. It is necessary to intensify cooperation on tackling illegal migration with Morocco and the main countries of origin in Africa, as part of a broader partnership on migration-related issues. The Commission proposes concrete initiatives for this purpose.

[06] FSC : WTO condemns US subsidies to exporters ; recipients of illegal support include Boeing

The WTO panel decision regarding US federal tax subsidies for exporters was circulated to WTO Members on 30 September. The Panel has found in favour of the EU in all respects. It concludes that despite some changes to its legislation the US has yet to abide by previous WTO rulings and the recommendations of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body regarding the FSC/ETI dispute. The Panel also makes clear that the tax subsidies which have been carried forward by using transitional periods and so-called 'grandfathering' violate WTO rules.
