  • [01] Commission approves €7.5 million assistance to Yemen

The European Commission has granted €7.5 million for two assistance projects in Yemen. The projects will support the Government and NGO partnership for the promotion and protection of human rights in Yemen and the sustainable development of its fishery sector. They are part of the Commission’s 2005-2006 strategy for Yemen that focuses on poverty reduction and strengthening of pluralism and democracy.

[02] Mergers: Commission approves takeover of Guidant Corporation by Johnson & Johnson, subject to conditions

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation the planned $ 24 billion (around € 18 billion) acquisition by US healthcare group Johnson & Johnson (J&J) of its competitor Guidant, a US company specialised in cardiovascular medical products, subject to conditions. In particular the parties must divest either J&J or Guidant Endoscopic Vessel Harvesting products (“EVH&#8221;), plus Guidant’s EEA endovascular business and J&J’s EEA Steerable Guidewires business. The Commission decision follows an in-depth investigation into the takeover (see <a href="http://europa.eu.int/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=IP/05/471&format=HTML&aged=1&language=EN&guiLanguage=fr">IP/05/471). In light of the commitments given by J&J, the Commission has concluded that the transaction would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or a significant part of it.
