[01] Statement by the EU Troika following incidents during a women's rights
demonstration in Istanbul on 6 March 2005
Ahead of a ministerial meeting between the EU Troika and Turkey in Ankara
on 7 March, the representatives of the European Union - Jean Asselborn,
current President of the Council of the European Union, Olli Rehn, European
Commissioner in charge of Enlargement and Denis MacShane, British Minister
for Europe – issued the following joint statement : "We were shocked by
images of the police beating women and young people demonstrating in
Istanbul in connection with International Women's Day. We condemn all
violence, as demonstrations must be peaceful. On the eve of a visit by the
EU during which the rights of women will be an important issue, we are
concerned to see such disproportionate force used against demonstrators. We
ask the Turkish authorities to carry out an investigation into this event
to prevent similar incidents in the future."
[02] Making life easier for business : Commission launches "Your Europe"
internet portal
Where should I register my company in Germany? What do I need to know about
taxes in Slovakia? And how do I find out more about EU's funding schemes?
The new "Your Europe" portal answers these and a wealth of other questions,
such as how to start up a business, financing and public procurement
opportunities in other Member States. Enterprises wishing to trade and
carry out business across the EU frequently encounter administrative
requirements and have to interact with public administrations. "Your
Europe" aims to make it easier to to find out about them and overcome
obstacles and to make life easier of businesses in the EU. It represents a
first step towards European eGovernment services and assists - through a
single entry point - businesses to find their way around.
[03] Commission clears acquisition of Elkem by Orkla
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Elkem ASA (Elkem) of
Norway by Orkla ASA (Orkla) also of Norway. Orkla is active in branded
consumer goods, chemicals, energy and financial investments. Elkem is
active in the production and supply of metals and materials to the steel,
foundry, chemicals, electronics and aluminium industries as well as in the
energy sector. The operation was examined under the simplified merger
review procedure.
[05] Customs : Budapest conference 9-11 March
The European Commission will, together with the Hungarian customs
administration, host a conference on the modernisation of the EU Customs
Code from 9 to 11 March in Budapest, Hungary. The conference will bring
together representatives of the European Parliament, traders and customs
and information technology experts from national customs administrations
and the Commission. The conference is the final stage of a purpose of
consultation on a draft Commission proposal for a radical overhaul of the
customs code so as to facilitate traders in their dealings with customs
administrations. Stakeholders have already been given the opportunity to
comment on the Commission's plans via the public consultations that the
Commission held in 2004. Journalists are welcome to participate in the
conference and in particular to attend the press conference that will take
place from 10h35-11h15 on 9 March.
