La plateforme technologique pour les transports par eau, laquelle participeront les entreprises du secteur, les autorités nationales compétentes, les organes de réglementation, des centres de recherche et des universités, a pour objet de stimuler les investissements publics et privés dans les activités de recherche et de développement et d'améliorer la cohérence des activités de recherche aux niveaux européen, national, régional et local. Lors de la manifestation de lancement d'aujourd'hui, la Commission sera représentée par Günter Verheugen, commissaire l'Industrie.[02] Preparatory work underway for a European Research CouncilThe first meeting will take place today of the Identification Committee convened by the European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potočnik to recommend the composition of the governing body of a future European Research Council. The presentation of revised requests by the EU gives an important boost to the DDA by providing focused and targeted information to assist the EU's WTO partners in the preparation of their revised offers for May. Those requests will be discussed bilaterally in Geneva during February.[05] Commission clears acquisition of WMC by XstrataThe European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of WMC Resource Limited of Australia by Swiss undertaking Xstrata plc. Xstrata is an international natural resources group based in Zurich exporting thermal coal. It also produces coal, copper, zinc, gold, silver and alloys. WMC is a major diversified Australian minerals explorer and producer. Its main business is the discovery, development, production, processing and marketing of minerals, metals and chemicals. WMC primarily produces nickel, copper, uranium oxide, gold, silver and phosphate fertilisers. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.[06] Commission approves acquisition of Grey by WPPThe European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation WPP's proposed acquisition of Grey. Both companies, provide marketing communications and media buying services. After detailed analysis, the Commission has concluded that the merger would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.[07] Commission consults stakeholders on the future of EU development policyThe European Commission is seeking views from a wide range of stakeholders on the most important issues that should inform the revision of the current European Community development policy. A new policy proposal will be made in the first half of 2005, aimed at providing a vision for long term reflection and positioning of the Union in the international development debate, as well as a framework to guide the implementation of EU development assistance. The Commission is therefore launching an internet consultation in order to reach the widest possible range of development partners. The consultation will run until 2 March 2005 with results to be published by April 2005.[08] Sri Lanka donor co-chairs meetingThe Co-chairs of the Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka will meet today in Brussels to express their support to Sri Lanka in the wake of the Tsunami disaster which struck the North, East and South coasts of the country, and to evaluate how best to assist Sri Lanka in moving the peace process forward. The meeting will be co-chaired by European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and the Luxemburg presidency, Mr Nicolas Schmitt, Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Immigration and will be attended by dignitaries from the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Norway. The Co-chairs will discuss the coordination of the Tsunami assistance and look for ways to ensure that the implementation of the tsunami assistance is sensitive to and strengthens the peace process.
