[01] Anti-crash radars: Commission enables cars to be equipped with road
safety technology
Short-range radars that can detect collision dangers and automatically
apply a car’s brakes should be available by mid-2005, further to a
Decision adopted today by the European Commission. The decision, which
allocates a specific radio frequency band to short-range radar devices, is
the result of a two-year drive by the Commission and EU radio spectrum and
road safety experts. According to the European Road Safety Action Programme,
the number of road accident victims is to be halved in the EU by 2010.
[02] Structural Funds well used in 2004 to contribute to more
competitiveness in the regions
Danuta Hübner, the Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, presented
today 2004 results for Structural Funds and Cohesion instruments. Budget
commitments and payments represent the highest amount ever available per
year in the history of the Structural Funds. Payment requests by Member
States exceeded this time even budgetary resources. This made an additional
amount – 2,4 billion EUR which were fully used - necessary to be agreed
upon by the Council and the European Parliament. The absorption of the
funds by new Member States which joined the EU in May 2004 is well under
way.
[03] Italy: Commission pursues legal action for breaches of EU
environmental legislation
The European Commission is taking further legal action against Italy in 15
cases concerning breaches of the EU’s environmental laws. The legislation
in question relates to waste-water treatment, industrial emissions,
prevention of industrial accidents, environmental impact assessment,
conservation of important natural habitats, protection of water resources,
control of air pollution, emissions trading and zoos. In ten of the cases
Italy is being referred to the European Court of Justice. In another case
Italy has received a final warning to comply with a previous Court judgment
or face the prospect of substantial penalties.
[04] Le Commissaire Louis Michel a remis le « Grand Prix Lorenzo Natali »
Juan Cristobal Fletcher

[06] Signature of agreement between the United Nations Office on Drugs and
Crime and the European Commission
The European Commission and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
(UNODC) will today sign their first agreement setting out ways in which the
two parties can work more closely together to tackle the problems of
illicit drugs and organised crime which constitute a major threat to
societies. The agreement is a step towards enhancing international
coordination and cooperation in addressing the challenges posed to
development, democracy and peace worldwide, and is one of the top
priorities for the United Nations as well as for the European Union, both
of which have an important role to play. The agreement will improve mutual
knowledge and understanding of policy and operational developments. It will
facilitate the exchange of information and good practice, the dissemination
of lessons learned, and joint activities. The agreement will be signed by
Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, Commissioner
for Justice, Freedom and Security Franco Frattini, and Antonio Maria Costa,
