[02] Commission initiates in-depth examination of the planned Austrian fertilizer wholesale joint venture

The European Commission has decided to initiate an in-depth examination into the proposed creation of the joint venture Inter-Fert Düngemittel GmbH (Inter-Fert) by the Austrian companies RWA Raiffeisen-Ware Austria AG (RWA) and AMI Agro Linz Melamine International GmbH (AMI). According to its first findings the Commission cannot exclude that the establishment of the joint venture by the leading Austrian manufacturer of fertilizers AMI and the most important agricultural wholesale organization RWA will create or strengthen a dominant position on the market for fertilizers in Austria and in bordering Bavaria.

[03] September 2004 : the euro area Business Climate Indicator decreased slightly

Following the general improvement since mid-2003, the Business Climate Indicator for the euro area worsened somewhat in the period August- September. In August, it decreased by 0.05 points and in September by 0.03. With a value of 0.48 in September it remains, however, at a relatively high level. The worsening of the BCI was mainly driven by a decline in the assessment made by managers in the industry sector on questions concerning export order books, stocks of finished products and production trend in the recent past. The decline was smoothed by a clear improvement in production expectations. Opinions about total order books remained steady.

[04] September 2004 : small deterioration of economic sentiment in September, after improvement in August

The economic sentiment indicator (ESI) for the EU worsened slightly in September following its improvement in August. It now stands at 103.6, 0.5 points lower than in August but 1.1 points higher than in July. In the euro area, the indicator reached a value of 100.7 in September, i.e. 0.2 points below the August value and 0.9 point above the July value.

[06] EU-Mercosur : EU presents its completed offer to Mercosur in on-going trade talks (29/09)

In the on-going negotiations for an EU-Mercosur Association Agreement, the EU sent Mercosur a completed offer. This offer matches the approach and the level of ambition in the offer which the Mercosur sent the EU on Friday 24 September. The offer proposes a gradual liberalisation of Mercosur exports of industrial and agricultural goods to the EU, the opening of its services market, access to a public procurement market worth €200 billion as well as non-discriminatory rules for Mercosur investors in Europe.

[07] Commission launches public consultation on strengthening of EU-US economic partnership

The European Commission launched today a public consultation of stakeholders on how to enhance the Transatlantic Economic Partnership. This is the first step towards implementing the "EU-US Declaration on Strengthening our Economic Partnership" adopted at the EU-US Summit on 26 June 2004 in Ireland by Presidents Prodi and Bush and Taoiseach Ahern. The Commission invites the business community, environmental and consumer organisations, trade unions and other interested groups and individuals to provide their views on the obstacles they face when trading or investing in each other's market and on future commercial and economic relations between the EU and the US.
