[02] Togo - Commission proposes « roadmap » towards the full resumption of EU aid

The European Commission has today adopted a proposal outlining a "roadmap" towards the full resumption of EU aid to Togo. The proposal links the full resumption of aid, including the release of new development aid funds from the 9th European Development Fund, to the holding of free and fair parliamentary elections. To further encourage positive change in Togo it is proposed to initiate the planning of new aid activities as soon as a date for transparent and democratic parliamentary elections is set and that the necessary electoral arrangements are in place and agreed by all parties in Togo. All throughout this process - and over a period of 24 months - the EU shall closely monitor the situation in Togo. The proposal will have to be adopted by EU Council of ministers.

[03] 'For Diversity. Against Discrimination' truck tour to help the drive against discrimination in the EU

An information truck hits the road tomorrow 1 September, beginning a tour of 10 EU countries to raise awareness of anti-discrimination issues. Part of the European Commission's wider “For Diversity. Against Discrimination” campaign designed to inform citizens of their rights under new EU anti-discrimination legislation, the truck tour will help the European Union's drive to combat discrimination and promote diversity. Odile Quintin, Employment and Social Affairs Director General at the European Commission and the Belgian Minister for Equality, Christian Dupont will start the truck off on its journey to visit 19 cities in 10 EU countries over a three month period.

[04] EU25 population up by 0.4% to reach 456 million - One in 14 people in world live in the EU25

On 1 January 2004, the population of the EU25 was 456.4 million and that of the euro zone 308.4 million. The ten new Member States added 74.1 million people to the EU15 (382.3 million). The population of the EU25 increased by 1.9 million in 2003, an annual rate of 0.4%, mainly due to net migration of 1.7 million, while the natural increase was 0.2 million. The EU25 accounts for 7.2% of the world population, far behind China (1 295 million or 20.5% of the world population) and India (1 057 million or 16.6%) but ahead of the United States (292 million or 4.6%) and Japan (127 million or 2.0%). The United States recorded a population increase of 0.9% with natural growth accounting for nearly two-thirds. Japan registered an increase of 0.1%, due solely to natural growth. These figures come from a report published jointly today by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, and the Council of Europe.

    [05] Euro-zone inflation estimated at 2.3%

Euro-zone annual inflation is expected to be 2.3% in August 2004 according to a flash estimate issued today by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. It was 2.3% in July 2004. The euro-zone inflation is measured by the Monetary Union Index of Consumer Prices (MUICP). To compute the MUICP flash estimates, Eurostat uses early price information relating to the reference month from Member States for which data are available as well as early information about energy prices. The flash estimation procedure for the MUICP combines historical information with partial information on price developments in the most recent months to give a total index for the euro-zone. No detailed breakdown is available. Experience has shown the procedure to be reliable (14 times exactly anticipating the inflation rate and 10 times differing by 0.1 over the last two years: it last differed by 0.2 in April 2002). Further information can be found in Eurostat News Release 113/2001, 5 November 2001.

[07] Olympic Games 2004 – Congratulations from President Prodi

Today the President of the European Commission Romano Prodi congratulated the city of Athens and the people of Greece for their brilliantly organised Olympic Games. “The Games were a huge success thanks to their unique spirit and smooth organisation but also because EU athletes did so well. Winning 82 gold medals and more than 280 medals in total, the European Union’s sportsmen and sportswomen performed outstandingly at Athens.” The President said it was his dream to see the EU Member States perform even better and in an even more united fashion at the next Olympic Games. “In 2008 I hope to see the EU Member State teams in Beijing carry the flag of the European Union alongside their own national flag as a symbol of our unity,” he said. “Congratulations again to the whole European sporting movement, which is founded on the basic values of all healthy, positive societies: a sense of fairness, generosity of spirit, grit and fortitude, and love of peace,” President Prodi said in conclusion.
