  • [01] Commission clears acquisition of Nedcon Groep N.V. by Voestalpine AG in the storage systems sector

The European Commission has approved the acquisition of the Dutch Nedcon Groep N.V. by the Austrian steel producer Voestalpine AG. Nedcon and Voestalpine (the latter through its Krems Finaltechnik division) are both active in the manufacture and installation of steel static storage systems for industrial use (pallet racks and shelving for warehouses and distribution centres). They also produce components for these systems. The analysis of the transaction has confirmed that the transaction does not lead to significant changes in the competitive structure of this market either in the EU, nor on a national basis.

[02] Commission approves acquisition of British combat vehicles maker Alvis by BAE Systems

The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation to the proposed acquisition of Alvis plc, a UK-based manufacturer of armoured combat vehicles, by UK defence contractor BAE Systems. The transaction does not raise competition concerns in Europe since overlaps are limited and other large and capable players compete in the market.

[03] Commission provides a further €1.35 million in aid for victims of house demolitions in Rafah (Gaza Strip)

The European Commission has allocated €1.35 million for victims of house demolitions in Rafah, in the south of the Gaza Strip. More than 10,000 people whose houses were destroyed or damaged during the Israeli army incursions last May and June will be provided with temporary accommodation pending permanent re-housing. They will also receive cash assistance to replace household goods and belongings that were lost in the rubble. Part of the funds will be used to repair shelters housing some 2,000 people as well as key public infrastructure that was damaged during the incursions in Rafah. Water supply networks, sewage systems, and two schools will be rehabilitated. The grant, channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), is directed to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

[04] Commission suspends imports of ostriches from South Africa after avian influenza outbreaks

Following the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (AI) outbreaks in two ratite (ostriches) farms in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, the European Commission adopted, on 10 August, a decision suspending the import of live ratites and their eggs, meat and products of ratites and pet birds from this country into the European Union with immediate effect until 1 January 2005. Avian influenza is a highly contagious poultry disease that can cause severe economic damage to the poultry industry and can, in exceptional cases, be transmitted to humans.
