[01] Commission challenges UK international roaming rates
The European Commission has sent two separate "statements of objections" to
two UK mobile network operators (MNOs), O2 and Vodafone. The objections
relate to the rates that both O2 and Vodafone charged other MNOs for
international roaming at wholesale level. Other MNOs needed to roam on O2's
and Vodafone's UK networks in order to enable their own subscribers to use
their mobile phones while in the UK. This situation is known as
international roaming. The high roaming fees were detrimental to consumers
travelling to the UK.
[02] Commission approves acquisition of GSW by Goldman Sachs and Cerberus
Group
The European Commission has cleared, under the Merger Regulation, the
proposed acquisition by two investment groups, Goldman Sachs Group (USA)
and Cerberus Group (USA), of the German residential and real estate company
GSW Berlin. (The operation, which was notified on 25 June, was examined
under a simplified procedure for unproblematic mergers).
[03] Avian influenza in Asia : prolongation of import embargo on poultry
products until 15 December
The European Commission has adopted a decision to continue the suspension
of imports into the EU of chicken products and pet birds from several Asian
countries where avian influenza has been confirmed since the beginning of
this year. The countries concerned are Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan,
Laos, Pakistan, China, South Korea and Vietnam. In some of these countries
outbreaks of avian influenza still occur and the overall disease situation
in the area remains unclear. The Commission therefore decided, with the
support of the Standing Committee for the Food Chain and Animal Health, to
prolong the existing ban (until 15 August 2004 - see IP/04/160) on imports
of poultry products until 15 December 2004. In detail the ban covers fresh
meat of poultry, ratites, wild and farmed feathered game, meat preparations,
meat products and raw pet food consisting of, or containing meat of those
species, eggs for human consumption, live birds, unprocessed feathers and
untreated game trophies.
[04] La Commission nomme les membres de trois comités consultatifs
scientifiques en matière non alimentaire
La Commission européenne a nommé les membres de trois nouveaux comités
consultatifs scientifiques : le comité scientifique des produits de
consommation (CSPC), le comité scientifique des risques sanitaires et
environnementaux (CSRSE) et le comité scientifique des risques sanitaires
émergents et nouveaux (CSRSEN). Ces comités ont été créés par la
Commission en mars dernier et remplacent un certain nombre de comités
existants (voir IP/04/296). Les 51 scientifiques qui ont été nommés
membres de ces nouveaux comités représentent un vaste éventail de
compétences scientifiques à l'échelle européenne et conseilleront la
Commission sur toutes les questions faisant partie de leur mandat. Etant
donné la variété des thèmes qu'aborderont les nouveaux comités, la
Commission a également établi une liste d'experts scientifiques
possédant des compétences spécifiques et pouvant être invités Ã
participer aux travaux des comités sur une base ad hoc. Ces nominations
sont intervenues à la suite d'une procédure de sélection rigoureuse et
ouverte. Près de 300 scientifiques ont répondu à un appel à candidatures
à un siège à l'un de ces comités qui avait été publié sur le site web
Europa de la Commission ainsi que dans le Journal officiel de l'Union
européenne.
