[02] Commission clears acquisition of Motor Columbus by UBS
The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation
to the acquisition of full control of the Swiss holding company Motor
Columbus AG, active in the energy sector, by the international banking
group UBS AG, incorporated in Switzerland and active in a broad range of
financial services. (The operation, notified on 14 May 2004, was examined
under the simplified merger review procedure).
[03] EU research for cheaper, greener and quieter aircraft
European-funded research projects to reduce aircraft noise and fuel
consumption are now running at full speed. Included is one of Europe's
largest-ever noise-reduction research ventures, known as SILENCE(R). A
consortium of 51 companies is testing new technologies to reduce aircraft
noise by up to 6 decibels (dB) by 2008, with the EU contributing half the
funding for SILENCE(R), with a total budget over €110 million. Other
significant initiatives include FRIENDCOPTER, to reduce helicopter engine
and rotor-blade noise ; TANGO, to create lighter aircraft structures ;
EEFAE, to build aero-engines that reduce fuel consumption and emissions ;
and AWIATOR, to decrease aircraft structural weight, reduce noise and
improve performance.
l'avenir.
[05] Poul Nielson represents Commission at the 4th ACP Summit (23-24/06,
Mozambique)
Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Poul Nielson, will
represent the European Commission at the 4th Summit of Africa-Carribean-
Pacific (ACP) Heads of State and Government which is being held in Maputo
on the theme "Together, shaping our future". Commissioner Nielson will
address the Summit on the subject of "prospects in a changing world - ACP-
EU relations". The visit to Maputo will also provide the opportunity to
build on the European Union's close partnership with Mozambique and to
celebrate 20 years of EU-Mozambique development cooperation. Mozambique is,
and has been for many years, one of the main beneficiaries of EU aid. Since
1978 it has received assistance of more than €1.5 billion from the
European Development Fund, the European Investment Bank and the EU Budget.
During his visit to Maputo, Commissioner Nielson will meet President
Joaquim Chissano, the Prime Minister, Ms Luisa Diogo, the Minister for
Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr Leonardo Simão, and the Deputy
Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and National Authorizing
Officer for the European Development Fund, Ms Frances Rodrigues. He will
also have an exchange of views with local non-Governmental organisations.
The visit will also provide an occasion to discuss the challenges facing
Mozambique and to exchange views on issues relating to regional security,
integration and trade as well as on pan-African matters and EU-African
Union relations. Mozambique currently holds the chair of the African Union.
