  • [01] Euro area economic recovery still on track

The euro-area's moderate recovery remains on track for 2004 despite some economic indicators - particularly those relating to business confidence - having recently sent mixed signals. The economy is set to gather further momentum during the second half of the year. This assessment is backed by positive developments both on the domestic and the external side. Consumer confidence is strengthening albeit only gradually, financing conditions are supportive and there are signs that the protracted investment slump has come to an end. In addition, business surveys show that buoyant world demand is offsetting the negative impact of the appreciation of the euro on euro-area exports. However, uncertainty about short-term prospects has increased somewhat recently.
