[02] Commission clears deal between Telenor and Canal+ regarding Nordic satellite pay-TV distribution

The European Commission has cleared a number of agreements regarding the exclusive co-operation between Norway's Telenor, its satellite TV platform Canal Digital and Canal+ Nordic for the satellite distribution of Canal+'s premium pay-TV channels in the Nordic region. With its clearance decision, the Commission takes due account of the short and mid-term benefits brought about by these arrangements for both competition and end-consumers. End- consumers in the Nordic region will continue to benefit from healthy competition in the Nordic satellite pay-TV market, in particular enhanced digital pay-TV services and the roll-out of new decoder technology at low cost.

[03] Commission allocates €31.75 million for humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in Iraq

The European Commission has allocated €31.75 million to humanitarian aid in favour of vulnerable populations in Iraq. This is the sixth allocation of humanitarian aid to Iraq in 2003. The Commission's total humanitarian response to the conflict in Iraq in 2003 thereby reaches €100 million. The objective of the decision is to enable an urgent and forceful response to a humanitarian situation that remains precarious. Activities will include the delivery of health-, water- and sanitation services ; education ; de-mining and a particular security component in view of the volatile security situation faced by humanitarian aid workers. Funds are managed by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO).

[04] Commission adopts ambitious plans to deliver €78 million in humanitarian aid to vulnerable populations in DR Congo, Sudan and Coastal West Africa

The European Commission has adopted three humanitarian aid packages totalling €78 million to meet the needs of victims of conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo (€40 million), Sudan (€20 million), and the Coastal West Africa region (€18 million). Commissioner for development and humanitarian aid Poul Nielson said : "The adoption of these plans is an affirmation of our commitment to engage and remain engaged in some of the largest and most consuming humanitarian crises to the benefit of the people in need. We will continue to focus our efforts on front-line humanitarian priorities such as health and food. 2003 has been a year of encouragement. Political results have been achieved that spark promises about a permanent end to conflicts in these three regions. We will continue our humanitarian effort in these delicate transitions to lasting peace. At the same time, we will encourage longer term donors to get engaged and take over substantial health, food security and rehabilitation programmes."

    [05] Flash estimate - December 2003 : Euro-zone inflation estimated at 2.1%

Euro-zone annual inflation is expected to be 2.1% in December 2003 according to a flash estimate issued today by Eurostat. It was 2.2% for November 2003.
