acquisition of the Italian air and space company Avio by Carlyle and
Finmeccanica
The European Commission has authorised the acquisition of Avio (formerly
FiatAvio) by the Italian conglomerate Finmeccanica and the US private
investment group Carlyle. Carlyle will hold 70% of Avio's share capital and
Finmeccanica will hold the remaining 30%. However, Finmeccanica and Carlyle
will exercise joint control over Avio. European Commission takes steps to
support the peace process in Liberia
Today the European Commission proposed to the Council to support the peace
process in Liberia by allocating €50 million from the European Development
Fund. Part of the proposed financing is destined to immediately support the
Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) to sustain its ongoing
peacekeeping operation in Liberia. This is in line with the EU's commitment
at the African Union summit in Maputo in July to provide assistance to
ongoing peace support operations. The EU assistance will allow the ECOWAS
operation to continue until the arrival of the UN stabilisation force

to compensate the costs of precautionary measures against FMD taken by
Germany, Belguim, Spain and Portugal in 2001
The European Commission has adopted four Decisions fixing the EU financial
contribution for the costs of precautionary measures taken by four Member
States to avoid the introduction and spread of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)
on their territory during the epidemic of 2001. These cover the costs for
the slaughter and destruction of animals and for the destruction of milk
and feedingstuffs and the costs for cleaning and desinfecting holdings. The
indicative EU contribution (60% of total eligible costs) is € 782,000 for
Germany, € 1,040,220 for Belgium, € 108,000 for Spain and € 125,000 for
Portugal. These are provisional figures, based on forecasts provided by the
Member States, pending the results of controls. July 2003 - Euro-zone
annual inflation down to 1.9%; EU15 stable at 1.8%
Euro-zone annual inflation fell from 2.0% in June to 1.9% in July 2003,
Eurostat the Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg
reports today. A year earlier the rate was 2.0%. EU15 annual inflation was
1.8% in July 2003, the same as in June. A year earlier the rate was 1.9%.
EEA annual inflation was 1.8% in July 2003. June 2003 compared to May 2003 -
Industrial production down by 0.1% in euro-zone; EU15 up by 0.3%
Seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.1% in the euro-
zone in June 2003 compared to May 2003, Eurostat, the Statistical Office of
the European Communities in Luxembourg, estimates today. Production
decreased by 0.9% in May 2003 after a rise of 0.3% in April 2003. Output in
the EU15 increased by 0.3% in June 2003, after a fall of 1.1% in May and a
gain of 0.7% in April. In June 2003 compared to June 2002, industrial
production decreased by 1.6% in the euro-zone and by 0.7% in the EU15.
