  • [01] Commission intervention no longer necessary to enable NDC Health to compete with IMS Health

The European Commission has withdrawn its interim measures decision adopted on 3 July 2001 against IMS Health (IMS), the world leader in data collection on pharmaceutical sales and prescriptions. A judgment from the Frankfurt Higher Regional Court, while recognising that IMS Health's 1860 brick structure was protected by national copyright, now allows NDC Health (NDC) to market a brick structure which meets customers' needs. Therefore there is no longer an urgency requiring the Commission's intervention.

[02] EC and US propose a framework for a joint approach on agricultural questions in WTO

Today the EU and the US presented a joint framework to relaunch agricultural negotiations. We have agreed that it is necessary for the two largest trading powers to develop a joint approach to the major issues dividing the WTO membership. It focuses on three areas, domestic support, market access and export competition. The joint paper reflects the great importance the EU and the US attach to their responsibility to pave the way for a successful and ambitious conclusion in Cancun and to provide added impetus to the cycle of trade negotiations.

[03] Democratic Republic of Congo: Commission adopts €4 million in humanitarian aid

The European Commission has approved a €4 million humanitarian aid package to support food and nutrition programmes for vulnerable groups affected by the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The funds will contribute to the World Food Programme Emergency Operation launched in June in response to the deterioration of the situation in Eastern Congo. This decision is managed by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office, which comes under the supervision of Commissioner Poul Nielson.

[04] Commission indicator forecasts euro area quarterly GDP growth of 0% to 0.4% for 3rd quarter, 0.2% to 0.6% for 4th quarter of 2003

The indicator-based model for quarterly GDP growth for the euro area, developed by the European Commission's Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs, forecasts a range of 0% to 0.4% for GDP growth in the third quarter of 2003, unchanged compared to the previous release. For the fourth quarter of 2003, the model suggests growth in the 0.2 to 0.6% range. The acceleration in the fourth quarter would be due to domestic factors, as suggested by the improvement in retail confidence, as well as external factors, as indicated by the rise in the US Purchasing Managers' Index for manufacturing.
