  • [01] Commission aid package aims to defuse tensions in Nepal

The European Commission has approved a €615,000 package of assistance to Nepal aimed at reducing the impact of the current conflict on long-term EU assistance programmes. The assistance is a response to the growing instability in the country, which has been under a state of emergency since the breakdown of peace talks with Maoist guerrillas in November 2001.

[02] Commission officially recognises Russia as a market economy country

The European Commission has approved an amendment to its anti-dumping law in order to recognise Russia as a market economy. This follows Commission President Prodi's Declaration during last May's EU-Russia summit. This proposal is expected to be approved by the Council in the Autumn. Once confirmed, the package will become EU law and the EU will be the first trading power to bestow the recognition of market economy status on Russia.
