€73 million in financial support from the EU. It focuses on increased cross-
border cooperation and sustainable development of the regional economy. The
European funding will attract a further €24.3 million in investment from
the public sector and €6 million from the private sector, creating total

[04] Franz Fischler and David Byrne final round table on agriculture and
food
Today European Commissioners David Byrne for Health and Consumer Protection
and Franz Fischler for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries
concluded a year-long process of strategic dialogue on agriculture and food
policy in Europe. At the final Round Table on Agriculture and Food in
Brussels, both Commissioners summarised the issues discussed over the past
year and, with the assistance of a distinguished panel of international
experts, presented a range of ideas that would assist the development of
agriculture and food policy in the years ahead. "Developing an integrated
approach to quality at all the stages of farming and of food production and
a consumer focus on quality were the over-arching themes of our year long
dialogue. The challenge for us is now to turn that into policy, legislation
and reality", Byrne and Fischler commented. Clearly the lessons learned
from the Round Table process will feed into policy reorientation in the
field of agriculture, food policy and in the way stakeholder information
and consultation is dealt with. Concretely, suggestions could be considered
in the perspective of the Mid-Term Review of the Common Agricultural Policy,
the Rural Development Policies and the implementation of the White Paper on
Food Safety. "Clear and unambiguous consumer information are essential to
informed consumer choice and this message came across very clearly during
our Round Tables. Policy and legislation will be developed to give effect
to this clear consumer message. Quality and value for money should go hand
in hand", said David Byrne.
[05] Commission gives conditional clearance to Imperial Tobacco's
acquisition of Reemtsma
The European Commission has given conditional approval to the proposed
acquisition of German cigarette manufacturer Reemtsma Cigarettenfabriken
GmbH by Imperial Tobacco Group Plc of the United Kingdom. The acquisition,
which will propel Imperial Tobacco to the fifth place in the world
cigarette market and third in the EU, raised competition concerns in the UK
market for low priced cigarettes, but the undertakings offered fully
addressed these concerns. The Commission's analysis is a legal one based on
the competitive assessment of the transaction concerned, as required under
the EU's merger control law.
[06] Commission clears acquisition of UK pub companies by Cinven
The European Commission has authorised the acquisition from Nomura
International of a controlling stake in two UK pub companies, The Unique
Pub Company and the Voyager Pub Group, by the UK venture capital company
Cinven.
[07] Classical swine fever in Germany, Luxembourg, France and Spain
The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health voted in favour
of European Commission proposals with regard to classical swine fever (CSF)
in Germany, Luxembourg, France and Spain. The export of live pigs and
porcine semen, ova and embryos from some areas bordering France, Germany
and Luxembourg has been banned. For Spain, the existing measures,
applicable until 31 May, will be extended until 30 June. The proposals will
now be adopted by the Commission. The situation will be reviewed at the
next meeting of the Committee, scheduled for 4-5 June.
[08] Green light for import of certain products of animal origin from China
The Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) voted
on Wednesday 8 May in favour of a European Commission proposal to allow the
resumption of imports of key products of animal origin from China. The main
products concerned are gelatine, certain fishery products caught and
packaged at sea an landed directly in the EU ; whole crustaceans caught in
the Atlantic Ocean packaged at sea and landed directly in the EU ; whole
fish, gutted and de-headed fish and fish fillets of the following species :
Alaska pollack, cod and redfish. The proposal will now be formally adopted
by the Commission and will enter into force shortly.
