[02] Classical swine fever in Spain Foot-and-mouth disease in the UK

The Standing Veterinary Committee (SVC) yesterday voted in favour of a European Commission proposal reducing the area in Spain from which the export of live pigs and porcine semen, ova and embryos is banned in response to outbreaks of classical swine fever (CSF). The restrictions in the autonomous region of Cataluña will now apply only in the provinces of Barcelona and Gerona (compared to the whole autonomous region of Cataluña which was subject to the export ban since 5 December 2001). The Committee also supported a proposal to authorise two slaughterhouses situated in the CSF protection zone to slaughter pigs coming from outside the protection zone. On foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom, the SVC accepted a proposal to limit the area from which the UK is not allowed to export live porcine and bovine animals and fresh porcine, bovine, ovine and caprine meat to the only county of Northumberland. The export of live ovine and caprine animals remains prohibited from the whole UK and the export of live bovine animals remains restricted because of BSE measures. The proposals will now be adopted by the Commission in the next several days and the situation will be reviewed at the next meeting of the SVC, scheduled for 15- 16 January 2002.

[04] Third quarter '01 compared to third quarter '00 - Euro-zone labour costs up by 3.3%; EU15 up by 3.5%

Total hourly labour costs in the whole economy of the euro-zone grew by 3.3% in nominal terms in the third quarter of 2001 compared to the same period the previous year, Eurostat reports today. In the second quarter of 2001 the increase was a 7%. For the EU15 the rise was 3.5% in the third quarter, compared to 3.1% in the previous quarter. Among countries for which data are available, the smallest annual rise was in Germany (2.4%), and the biggest in the Netherlands (5.0%).

[05] December 2001 Euro-area business climate indicator slightly down -0.03

After the steep fall in October (by 0.58) and a moderate decline in November, the Business Climate Indicator weakened marginally further in December (-0.03). This relative stabilisation in December is encouraging but it is premature to conclude that there is any clear sign of the future direction of the confidence of industrials firms across the euro area at this stage.
