  • [01] Commission authorises Fiat's acquisition of Montedison through Italenergia The European Commission has cleared the acquisition by the Fiat Group - through Italenergia - of sole control of Italy's energy company Montedison and subsidiaries Edison and Sondel. The Commission's investigation has shown that the takeover will not adversely affect competition in the Italian electricity market since, at this stage, Montedison will be controlled by Fiat and the latter has only a small activity in the electricity sector. However, in the event that Electricité de France (EdF) will acquire joint control in Montedison the Commission will have to examine the case again.
  • [02] Go ahead given for € 17 million Leader+ programme for rural development in the Spanish region of Navarre The Commission approved the Community Initiative LEADER+ programme in the Spanish region of Navarre. Welcoming the decision, Franz Fischler, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, said: "This program aims to pilot new ideas to help build a more sustainable society, economy and environment for rural Spain. It aims to improve the quality of life for all those who live in rural areas. Leader+ will help to increase the added value of local products and to make the best use of natural and cultural resources." The total public expenditure under this programme is € 17 million, over a period ending in 2006. This includes an EU contribution of € 8.5 million.
