  • [01] Commission aims to boost labour market equality in Great Britain Anna Diamantopoulou, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, signed today a decision approving the new EQUAL Community Initiative Programme for Great Britain for the 2001-2006 period. Under the programme, the European Social Fund (ESF) will provide euro 387.91 million to develop new ways of fighting discrimination and inequality in the field of employment. These plans support the four pillars of European Employment Strategy. The overall budget for the UK programme is euro 775.82 million, of which euro 351.06 million will be contributed by the British public sector, euro 387.91 million by the EU and euro 36.85 million from national private sources.
• [03] Removal of Ante Jelavic as a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina European External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten yesterday issued the following statement : "I understand and support the decision by High Representative Petritsch to remove Mr Ante Jelavic from his position as a member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. I very much regret the fact that Mr Jelavic's recent actions left the High Representative with no choice but to take this step. Let there be no doubt. The Bosnian Croat people are central to the future of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Bosnia and Herzegovina is their country too. Bosnian Croats deserve real leadership from their leaders, leadership that will give them a future within that country, not imprison them in the past. That means working hard to make Bosnia and Herzegovina and its legal institutions function, not seeking to undermine them. The last year has seen much progress in the Balkans, including in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Like others, I urge Bosnian Croats to join in that progress and to insist that their leaders work for their people's interests, not their own."
