[02] Euro-zone economic sentiment indicator steady in October 2000 ;
increase in the EU
(! embargo 12 am !) As a result, the economic sentiment indicator remained
steady in the euro area while increasing by 0.1 point in the EU as a whole.
The construction confidence indicator increased by 2 points in the EU and
by 3 points in the euro area. This was due to a remarkable rise in order
books in October. Industrial capacity utilization has continued to rise in
October by 0.4 percentage points in the EU and by 0.8 in the euro area. As
a consequence of this fifth consecutive increase, the level of capacity
utilization in the industrial sector has reached 84.7% in the euro area and
84% in the EU as a whole. Consumer confidence remained steady in the euro
area in October and rose by 1 point in the EU.
[03] September industrial producer prices rose by 0.9% in euro-zone ; plus
0.8% in EU15
(! embargo 12 am !) The Euro-zone industrial producer price index was 0.9%
higher in September 2000 compared with the previous month, Eurostat
estimates today. The index had gone up by 0.3% in August. EU15 prices,
which increased by 0.2% in August, rose by 0.8% in September. In September
the rise in the overall index was due to a strong increase in the
intermediate goods sector, prices rising by 2.2% in the euro-zone and 2.0%
in the EU15. The other sectors recorded much smaller gains. While durable
and non-durable consumer goods edged 0.1% and 0.2% upwards respectively in
both the euro-zone and the EU15, the index for capital goods advanced 0.1%
in the euro-zone and was unchanged in the EU15.
[05] "Making safety the key ingredient of our food - introducing the
European Food Authority proposal" - live internet chat with David Byrne on
8 November 2000 from 5 to 7 pm (CET)
The proposals for a European Food Authority and for a General Food Law are
the key building blocks in the European Commission's strategy for food
safety. Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner David Byrne will
discuss these proposals live on the internet on the day the Commission is
tabling them. His objective : making safety the most important ingredient
of our food. He'll explain how he thinks he can do it. And he wants to know
the views of consumers and get feedback on his proposals. Because he
believes consumer concerns must be at the heart of food safety policy. The
discussion will take place in five EU official languages (English, French,
German, Italian and Spanish). Questions may be put in any of those
languages and may also be sent in advance to : Chat-Byrne@cec.eu.int.
Questions should be as short as possible, 256 characters maximum. For
further practical information on how to take part in the chat, please see
our "Joining the chat" page at http://europa.eu.int/comm/chat/byrne1/index_en.htm
[06] New EU science prize of euro 1 million to be awarded tomorrow
And the winner of the prize is… ? Tomorrow afternoon the winners of the
René Descartes Prize will be known. European Research Commissioner Philippe
Busquin will award the new prize to international research teams that have
been selected for the scientific excellence of their work and for their
international teamwork. "Scientific excellence, although a reality of
modern science, is not rewarded enough in Europe", says Mr Busquin. "This
new prize is based on an appreciation of cross-border teamwork and European
networking, which is often a determining factor of outstanding quality of
science in Europe, but not normally a selection criterion in scientific
prizes." The jury, which will select the winners is composed of 10
internationally renowned personalities, chaired by Yves Michot, the
designer of the Concorde.
