[01] Commission steps up fight on cartels
In a speech today to the Nordic competition conference in Stockholm,
European Commissioner for Competition Mario Monti lifts the veil on
upcoming proposals to increase the fight on price-fixing and other damaging
cartels while reforming the European antitrust rules. The proposals, which
will soon be submitted to the Council, seek to strengthen the Commission's
powers of investigation for example when searching companies' premises or
questionning their employees. In his speech, Mr Monti also raises the issue
of consumer compensation for cartel behaviour.
