[01] Poul Nielson announces more than euro 25 million in aid for victims of
the Mozambican floods
Following his two-day fact finding mission to Mozambqiue with Portuguese
State Secretary Amado, European Commission for Development and Humanitarian
aid, Poul Nielson, today announced euro 25 million in aid for victims of
the floods. This assistance includes euro 4.15 million in emergency food
and humanitarian aid, half of which has already been released, and the
remaining 2 million will be delivered shortly. Announcing this help, Mr
Nielson said : "This assistance will ensure that humanitarian organisations
can continue their relief work, bringing much needed help to those who have
lost their homes and livelihoods and are now facing serious nutritional,
hygiene and health problems. I am already preparing to release further
humanitarian aid on top of these amounts".
[02] EU15 current account surplus euro 1.9 billion in the 4th quarter of
1999 ; euro 2.1 billion surplus on trade in services
(! embargo 12 am !) The EU15 external current account recorded a surplus of
euro 1.9 billion in the fourth quarter of 1999, as compared with a surplus
of ECU 8 billion in the fourth quarter of 1998 and a surplus of euro 3.6
billion in the third quarter of 1999. In the fourth quarter of 1999 the
EU15 external balance of trade in services reached a surplus of euro 2.1
billion as compared with a surplus of 1.1 billion ecu in the fourth quarter
of 1998 and a surplus of euro 3 billion in the third quarter of 1999. These
provisional figures have been issued today by Eurostat, Statistical Office
of the European Communities in Luxembourg. The data will be subject to
revision in two months.
[03] Dialogue sur l'Europe : premier débat public le 8 mars 2000
Le Président de la Commission européenne Romano Prodi et les Commissaires
Michel Barnier et Viviane Reding ouvriront le premier "dialogue sur
l'Europe", mercredi 8 mars, au Palais des Congrès à Bruxelles, avec Nicole
Fontaine, Présidente du Parlement européen, Loyola de Palacio, Vice-
Présidente de la Commission et des Commissaires Frits Bolkestein, Philippe
Busquin, Pedro Solbes et Margot Wallström. D'autres personnalités
participeront également à ce premier débat, notamment le Vice-Président du
Parlement européen, M. David Martin, le Président de la Commission des
Affaires constitutionnelles du PE, M. Giorgio Napolitano, Mme Béatrice
Rangoni Machiavelli, Présidente du Comité économique et social, M. Jos
Chabert, Président du Comité des régions, un représentant de la Présidence
portugaise et M. l'Ambassadeur Josef Kreuter, chef de la mission de la
République tchèque auprès de l'UE.
[04] Poul Nielson to visit Tanzania and Rwanda from 6-10 March
The European Commissioner for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid,
Poul Nielson, will make an official visit to Tanzania and Rwanda. During
his visit, Mr Nielson will meet with members of both governments and visit
EU financed projects. Whilst in Rwanda, Mr Nielson will sign the National
Indicative Programme which sets the framework for EU-Rwanada Development
Cooperation.
