  • [01] Commission Y2K monitoring centre reports glitch-free rollover

The smooth transition over the rollover weekend confirms the predictions of most experts that due to the thorough and serious preparations mounted in critical systems and infrastructure sectors, the impact of Y2K bug related problems has been largely neutralised. A cumulative effect may appear in the weeks or months to come, as a large number of small glitches builds up in systems that are increasingly inter-connected. In the countries of the European Union, Y2K coordinators will continue to be vigilant, and to share information with each other. The European Commission's monitoring centre (which until yesterday maintained a 24/24 hour watch) is in the process of reducing its out-hours of activity, based upon the continuing smooth resumption of normal working operations throughout the world. Key personnel will be on telephone stand-by until the end of the week, and the virtual network of individual experts, of which it forms part, will remain intact and ready to mobilise at short notice if needed.
