[02] Commission initiates recovery procedure in the Berthelot case
Mr Philippe Busquin, European Commissioner for Research, in agreement with
Ms Michaele Schreyer, Commissioner for Budget, has initiated the procedure
for the recovery of the indemnities paid by the Commission to Mr Berthelot
during his term in 1995-1997 as scientific visitor in DG Research and the
Joint Research Center.
[03] Statement by Chris Patten, European Commissioner for External
Relations, on 'Energy for Democracy'
"I am concerned to hear of the continued delay in the processing through
customs at the border of the initial shipment of heating oil for Nis and
Pirot under the EU's 'Energy for Democracy' scheme. The EU has moved
swiftly to make available this oil, which is badly needed by Nis and Pirot.
The longer the Serbian authorities take to process this delivery, the
longer the citizens of Nis and Pirot will go without heating. If the FRY
authorities are as concerned as they claim to be about the heating
situation facing their people, I am sure they will do everything in their
power to get the oil to its destination. The people of Nis and Pirot will
find it hard to understand if their own authorities stand between them and
heating this winter."
[04] Poul Nielson heads mission to assess needs in East and West Timor
Poul Nielson, European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid,
heads a mission November 28-December 3 to assess needs in East and West
Timor, and to meet the authorities in Indonesia. Mr Nielson's mission will
visit refugee camps in West Timor, then travel to Dili for meetings with
United Nations agencies and non-governmental agencies, as well as with the
Timorese authorities. There will also be visits to projects co-funded by
the European Commission Humanitarian Office (ECHO). Finally, Mr Nielson
will visit Jakarta for meetings with the Indonesian authorities to secure
ongoing cooperation.
