[02] Sustainability impact assessment to underpin EU approach on
sustainable development in run-up to Seattle
A new Sustainability Impact Assessment (SIA) carried out on behalf of the
European Commission by the University of Manchester has been issued today.
The SIA puts the European Union (EU) at the forefront of analysis of the
relationship between trade liberalisation, economic growth, social equity
and environmental protection. It provides an important contribution in
assessing the impact that the EU's proposals for the upcoming round of WTO
talks will have on sustainability.
[03] European and Latin America businesses and governments to focus on
Mercosur and WTO trade talks
Top business people and senior-level governmental representatives from the
European Union (EU) and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay)
are meeting today in Mainz for the Second Mercosur-EU Business Forum (MEBF)
Conference. The Conference aims to provide business recommendations to be
considered in the EU-Mercosur negotiations for an Inter-regional
Association Agreement between the regions and in the World Trade
Organisation's Millennium Round. The European Commission supports the
efforts of business in the two regions to develop a dialogue in spite of
the current difficulties in the Mercosur countries, and is expecting the
parties to re-state their commitment to the main recommendations of the Rio
Declaration (February 1999).
d'euros.
