[02] Top European Maritime Forum meets in Southamton
European Commissioners for Industrial Affairs and Transport, Martin
Bangemann and Neil Kinnock, will participate in the tenth plenary session
of the Maritime Industries Forum (MIF), which takes place in the City of
Southampton on 23/24 June. Around two hundred participants are expected to
attend what has become the key event of Europe's maritime year, with
delegates coming from shipowners, shipbuilders and maritime equipment
manufactures, to ports, maritime technology centres, fisheries and small
craft. In addition to its industry representatives, the MIF is made up of
delegates from the governments of European Union's (EU) Member States and
EFTA as well as representatives from European Institutions the Commission,
the European Parliament and regional bodies such as AMRIE (the Alliance of
Maritime Regional Industries in Europe). This year the Forum will receive
reports from its Panels dealing with Short Sea Shipping, Maritime Resources,
Ship Financing, Research & Development, and Human Resources. Amongst the
key topics to be addressed will be the crises in the shipbuilding sector
posed by Korea, and issues relating to the significance of the European
maritime industries to the EU economy. Hosted this year by the City of
Southampton, the MIF may be contacted through its Secretariat by e-mail on
maritime@tcp.co.uk. A press conference will take place on 24 June at 12.30
pm, Mayflower Conference room of the De Vere Grand Habour Hotel in
Southamton.
[03] Anita Gradin : "Fight against violence against women is now firmly on
the EU agenda"
At a ministerial conference in Berlin today on equal opportunities, Anita
Gradin, European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, speaking on the
subject of violence against women, said that significant progress has been
made in recent year in putting this subject on the European Union's agenda.
"One of the most recent initiatives is the ongoing European campaign
against violence against women, with the main objectives to raise awareness
among the public, to exchange information and promote further actions on
both national and European level". So far the campaign has included a
number of conferences on European level. 2 million euro has been made
available for information projects in the Member States and the Commission
is now in the process of selecting the projects. The visual and media part
of the campaign at European level will start towards the end of the summer.
"However, in spite of the positive developments, much remains to be done in
order to demonstrate that our societies do not tolerate violence against
women. We must focus our measures more also to include men. More needs to
be done to support and protect the victims. We must continue our support to
non-governmental organisations active in this field. And, finally, we must
not forget the special needs of children who grow up in families where
violence is a part of their daily life", the Commissioner said.
