[02] Commission decides Reasoned Opinion against Finland for non-respect of the EU's Wild Birds Directive

The European Commission decided to notify a Reasoned Opinion to Finland under Article 169 of the EC Treaty for its failure to comply with certain provisions of the European Union's Wild Birds Directive (Council Directive 79/409/EEC on the conservation of wild birds).

[II] Other news - Autres nouvelles

[03] Commission approves the joint venture between Financial Times (UK) and Gruner+Jahr (Germany)

The European Commission has approved the setting-up of a joint venture by the UK company Financial Times Group Limited and the German company Gruner+Jahr AG & Co for the purpose of developing and publishing a new German language business and financial daily newspaper, the content of which is designed for the German market. The newspaper will be distributed in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Given that the launch of a new financial daily in German will further increase competition the operation does not give raise to concerns.

[05] Second meeting of EU/US Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue

The European Union (EU) / United States (US) Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue takes shape : from 22 to 24 April, nearly 100 representatives of consumer organisations and high-ranking government officials from both sides of the Atlantic will meet for the second time in order to identify consumer issues of common concern which they would like to address in the future. They will discuss electronic commerce, food and other questions of the new transatlantic agenda from a consumer angle and establish a six month workplan. Main speakers are European Commissioner for Consumer policy, Emma Bonino, for the European side, and Sue Esserman, Deputy US Trade Representative for the US side. The plenary sessions on Friday morning and Saturday afternoon are also open to the public. The Transatlantic Consumer Dialogue was launched in September 1998 at the initiative of the European Commission. The idea is to strengthen the voice of the consumer in order to complement the Transatlantic Business Dialogue, which has substantial influence on the EU-US economic partnership on issues ranging from food, pharmaceuticals and auto safety standards to electronic commerce.
