[02] Hans van den Broek visits Slovakia on 19-20 April 1999
Hans van den Broek, European Commissioner in charge of external relations
with Central and Eastern European countries, will be visiting Slovakia on
19-20 April, where he will meet the Slovakian authorities to discuss the
country's preparations for European Union (EU) membership. The
Commissioner will have meetings with the Prime Minister, Mr Mikulas
Dzurinda, Deputy Prime Ministers Pavol Hamcik, Ivan Miklos, Lubomir Fogas,
and Pal Csaky, Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan and Deputy Foreign Secretary
Jan Figel. Mr van den Broek will participate in a joint meeting of the
Committees for European Integration and Foreign Affairs in the National
Council. He will also address students at the Economic University in
Bratislava. This visit will be an opportunity to discuss Slovakia's
further steps in the pre-accession process. Specific attention will be
paid to the Government's and Parliament's measures to address the political
and economic criteria for membership and speed up the alignment of
Slovakia's legislation to the EU. The visit also offers the opportunity to
review the progress made by the High Level Working Group which was set up
between the Commission and Slovakia when Prime Minister Dzurinda visited
Brussels just after his appointment on 1998. Mr van den Broek and Mr Hamcik,
Deputy Prime Minister responsible for European Integration, will hold a
joint press conference at 16.00 on 20 March.
