maritime.
[02] EU/US workshop on work organisation
Within the framework of the New Transatlantic Agenda, American and European
experts in the field of work organisation meet in Brussels on 8 and 9 June
1998 to exchange views on developments in labour markets in Europe and the
United States (US) and discuss the future direction of employment policy.
The workshop, which will be opened by European Commissioner for Employment
and Social Affairs, Padraig Flynn, and co-chaired by the Deputy Director-
General of DG V, Hywel Jones, and Assistant Secretary of the US Department
of Labor, Richard McGahey, will compare developments in the European Union
(EU) and the US from four specific angles : flexibility within the firm,
flexibility and security, building new partnerships, and supportive
structures (examining the role of governments and labour market
organisations). Speaking in Brussels today, Commissioner Flynn said that
the EU is watching the economic achievements of the US with interest. He
cited the significant contribution of US economic policy to strong
employment creation, workplace innovation and technology-friendly
development of goods and services, and went on to say that he looks forward
to the European Employment Strategy achieving the same success. This
workshop will take place at the Hotel Palace (3 rue Gineste), starting with
Mr Flynn's address at 2.30 pm. Journalists are welcome to attend.
[03] Franz Fischler : "EU stands by its GATT-commitments"
(! embargo 7 pm !) Speaking to representatives of the Canadian agri-food
industry in Winnipeg today, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural
Development Franz Fischler pointed at the similar challenges that farmers
in Europe and Canada have to face : how to survive in conditions of
globalised economies, how to respond to the trend towards increased world
trade liberalisation and to the developments of the world markets. After
outlining the Commission's reform proposals on agriculture in the framework
of Agenda 2000, Mr Fischler confirmed the European Union's (EU) intentions
to act "fully in conformity with our GATT commitments." "The EU has not in
the past and does not intend in the future to use export refunds in an
agressive manner", he said, referring to a barley sale to the United
States. Furthermore, Mr Fischler invoked the difference of the densely
populated rural area in the EU compared to Canada and explained the
importance of a reorganised rural development policy for the viability of
the EU's countryside. "Emphasize will be laid on improving the processing
and marketing of agricultural products and on bigger incentives for farmers
to contribute to the protection of the environment and upkeep of the
countryside", declared Mr Fischler.
