[01] EU participates in US-Japan car talks
Over the next two days, the European Commission will participate in a meeting
in San Francisco to monitor the implementation of the bilateral Automotive
Framework Agreement which the US and Japan signed last year in August. This
will be the first annual meeting provided for by the Agreement. The
Commission's participation follows a period of intensive contacts with both the US
and Japanese governments to ensure the interests of EU producers are fully
protected.
[02] Sir Leon Brittan: Indecision on EMU is good for Britain; discrimination is
bad for Europe
Addressing the Baker & McKenzie Law Conference in Brussels today, Trade
Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan warns that the closer Britain moves towards ruling
out participation in a single currency in advance, the less seriously Europe will
take her arguments about how EMU should be set up. Nor will a "crude display
of anti-European machismo" ahead of the election fool the voters. He also
cautions Britain's EU partners against any risk of discrimination in this crucial
preparatory phase towards those countries not committed to joining EMU.
