  • [01] European Commission funds first nationwide demining programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina

As part of its commitments to reconstruction in Bosnia and to its wider campaign against the scourge of anti-personnel mines, the European Commission has today agreed with the governments of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Federation and Republika Srpska the implementation of the first country-wide demining programme. Funding of over ECU 6 million will cover several proposed projects: the first including the purchase of mine clearance equipment for up to 20 mobile teams, along with the salaries of 240 local mine clearers. Their equipment will include over 30 vehicles, and detection, protection, medical, communications and other materials. The second project will create a rapid-response Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, with ten four-men teams trained for emergency mine and bomb disposal tasks. Again the Commission funding will cover equipment, including ten vehicles, and the salaries of 20 local support staff along with 40 personnel in the EOD teams. For both projets, 70 percent of resources will be devoted to the Federation, and 30 percent to Republika Srpska.

[03] Commission approves the acquisition of H.C. Starck's Corundum Business by Treibacher and Creditanstalt- bankverein

The European Commission has approved an operation by which the Austrian companies Creditanstalt-Bankverein AG, Wien, and Treibacher Schleifmittel AG, Villach/Landskron, acquire each 50% of the share capital of the German company Korund Laufenburg GmbH, Laufenburg (KLG). KLG comprises the worldwide business activities of the H.C. Starck GmbH & Co. KG in the field of corundum and zirconia corundum.
