  • [01] EU-Japan ministerial meeting: Relations and trade on the right track

    Members of the European Commission today met with senior members of the Japanese Government for the annual EU/Japan Ministerial meeting. Both sides agreed that EU/Japan relations have improved and noted that bilateral trade has increased faster than world trade. On the Commission side the meeting was chaired by Sir Leon Brittan, Vice President in charge of relations with Japan. Commissioners Bangemann, van den Broek, Monti and Oreja participated in the Ministerial. The Japanese delegation had a special meeting with President Santer. The Japanese Government was represented by Mr Yukihiko Ikeda, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Shunpei Tsukahara, Minister for International Trade and Industry and Mr Shusei Tanaka, Minister of State for Economic Planning.

    [02] The Commission contributes to Atlanta Olympic Aid 1996, in cooperation with UNICEF

    The European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) has undertaken to commit five million dollars in contribution to Atlanta Olympic Aid 1996 the humanitarian programme connected with the Atlanta Olympic Games. Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Emma Bonino announced the contribution in Atlanta today, in the course of a press conference with Billy Payne, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (ACOG), and Stephen Lewis, Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF. This contribution represents a quarter of the total fundraising target for the Olympic Aid Atlanta 1996 campaign and will finance life-saving immunization programmes for children, implemented by UNICEF, in a total of nine war affected countries. !!! embargo 5 pm !!!

    [03] Humanitarian aid: news in brief

    The European Commission has approved humanitarian aid projects to run in China, Sierra Leone and Colombia. The projects, worth a total of ECU 1.3 million, are being channelled via the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO). The specialist agencies of the United Nations, the Red Cross family and non-governmental organisations will carry out the practical work of humanitarian assistance in the field.

    [04] Padraig Flynn visits the United States and Canada

    Padraig Flynn, Commissioner with responsibility for Employment, Social Affairs and Public Health matters, will be in Washington D.C. on 2 and 3 May and will be in Ottowa on 6 and 7 May. Cooperation with the European Union in the fields of Employment, Social Affairs and Public Health will be the main focus of Commissioner Flynn's official visit to the United States and Canada.

    [05] Yves-Thibault de Silguy: le mouvement vers l'euro est irréversible

    "Certains doutaient il y a un an de la possibilité pour l'Europe de créer sa monnaie unique. Aujourd'hui les doutes se sont dissipés", a déclaré ce jour Yves-Thibault de Silguy, Commissaire chargé des affaires économiques, monétaires et financières, devant la Fondation de recherche économique et industrielle à Athènes. "L'Union est une grande puissance économique. Elle va devenir une grande puissance monétaire". "L'euro est nécessaire pour créer des emplois. Mais il n'est pas suffisant". Selon le Commissaire, l'Union monétaire doit s'accompagner de politiques structurelles dynamiques et adaptées.
