[03] Ritt Bjerregaard on Chernobyl
!!! embargo 3.30 pm !!!
Speaking to the European Parliament today on the
Chernobyl accident, Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard welcomed the
decision of Ukrainian President Kutchma to close Chernobyl by the year 2000.
In the framework of the G7 the Commission will continue to cooperate with the
Ukraine and the International Financial Institutions to fully implement the
Memorandum of Understanding, signed in Ottawa in 1995. "The conditions for
a worldwide cooperation have never been as favourable as they are today : In
contrast to 1986, the world is no longer divided by the Cold War. Instead of the
formerly prevailing confrontation we have now established a network of
cooperation with the States which succeeded the Soviet Union. Some of us may
therefore be impatient about the progress of this cooperation. But let us not
forget : we have to respect the sovereignity of our partners as independent
states," Ritt Bjerregaard said. !!! embargo 3.30. pm !!!
