BRUSSELS - European Union health ministers agreed unanimously on Thursday,
despite Commission objections, to set up a network to monitor contagious
diseases, EU officials said.
[02] P&O/Stena ferry link-doubt
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to raise doubts next week over
the proposed joint venture between the Peninsular and Oriental Steam
Navigation Company and Stena Line AB of Sweden, EU sources said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had approved the
purchase by Worms et Compagnie of sole control of Groupe Saint-Louis.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is concerned that a link between the
Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company and Stena line AB of Sweden
may create a duopoly in cross-channel transport, EU sources said on Thursday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Thursday it had cleared the merger
between Lyonnaise des Eaux and Compagnie de Suez saying that it would not pose
any competition problems on the quasi-totality of the markets concerned.

BRUSSELS - The European Union and the United States remained at odds on
Thursday over a final deal on mutual recognition of safety standards for a
variety of products ranging from pharmaceuticals to pleasure boats.

BRUSSELS - Belgian Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene, spurned by Britain three
years ago as European Commission president, said on Thursday he supported
London's desire to keep its frontier checks with the rest of Europe.

PARIS - Prime Minister Lionel Jospin will get an early chance to test his new
Socialist-led government's policies on Europe at a series of international
gatherings in the next two weeks.
