[01] Date set for meeting with Blair
THE HAGUE - EU leaders will hold their first meeting with Tony Blair in three
weeks time amid cautious optimism it will prove easier to do business with
Britain's new Labour prime minister than with his Conservative predecessors.

BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jacques Santer congratulated British
Labour leader Tony Blair on his election as British Prime Minister on Friday
and said he wanted to meet him as soon as possible.

BRUSSELS - Britain's European partners on Friday welcomed the Labour Party's
landslide general election victory and expressed hope a new government under
Tony Blair would be an easier partner in European integration.

BRUSSELS - European Union Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Saturday
Britain's new prime minister Tony Blair was a pragmatic man who should be able

World Trade Organisation because of Washington's plans to block imports of EU
poultry in a row over food safety rules.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had opened a full probe
into a proposed joint venture between Coca Cola Co and Carlsberg A/S of
Denmark.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had approved a plan by
U.S. company Tenneco to buy the protective and flexible packaging division of
KNP BT.
[09] Santer hits at Renault
PARIS - European Commission President Jacques Santer denounced on Saturday as
"inexcusable" the way French auto maker Renault SA closed its factory at
Vilvoorde, Belgium, in February.
