[01] Little progress on EU reforms
LUXEMBOURG - Just six weeks before EU leaders are due to sign landmark treaty
reforms at a summit in Amsterdam, the bloc's foreign ministers remained bogged
down on Tuesday in the nuts and bolts of institutional changes.
[02] Poland, Hungary must make efforts
LUXEMBOURG - The European Union told two of the eastern European countries
expected to be first in line to join early next century they had to make
further efforts to avoid unnecessary delays in crossing the threshold.
[03] 2.4 pct rise for 1998 budget
BRUSSELS - The European Commission opened the bidding for the EU's 1998 budget
on Wednesday, proposing a 2.4 percent rise in committed expenditure totalling
more than 91 billion European currency units.
[04] Turkey and Greece hold talks
ISTANBUL - Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller began talks with her Greek
opposite number Theodoros Pangalos on Wednesday, a day after Greece announced
it would maintain its veto on European Union aid to Turkey.

WASHINGTON - U.S. and European Union officials averted a potentially costly
trans-Altantic trade war on Wednesday when they at least partially settled a
long fight over meat import regulations, a senior U.S. Agriculture Department
official announced.

BRUSSELS - The European Union launched its food safety "bible" on Wednesday,
pledging to protect the "salad, steak and chips" with better food inspection
and to put expert reports on the Internet.

BRUSSELS - The Greek government has agreed to take a series of steps to speed
up liberalisation of its telecommunications market, the European Commission
said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had approved a Spanish
proposal to compensate GSM mobile phone consortium Airtel Movil for paying 85
billion pesetas to obtain an operating licence.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission adopted an ambitious plan on Wednesday to
remove all remaining barriers to the creation of a truly single market in the
15-nation bloc by 1999 when it adopts a single currency.

BRUSSELS - European Internal Market Commissioner Mario Monti said on Wednesday
he was hopeful that the EU would be able to achieve a higher degree of tax
coordination by the end of the year.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it may appeal against a
negative World Trade Organisation ruling on the European Union's banana
regime.

BRUSSELS - EU Regional Affairs Commissioner Monika Wulf-Mathies called on
Wednesday for an overhaul of European regional, social and farm aid spending,
and said aid should not be used to fatten firms for privatisation.

BRUSSELS - European Union countries have moved significantly closer to
reaching a deal to open up the EU gas market to competition, an EU official
said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - European Union cereals farmers have been over-compensated for cuts
in support prices, EU Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler said on Wednesday.

respect of animal welfare standards, the European Commission proposed.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had ordered Spain to
recover 1.9 billion pesetas in aid granted to national aircraft maker
Construcciones Aeronautica.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had authorised Britain
to provide 891 million pound to its coal industry through July 2002.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had cleared plans by
German industrial giant Siemens AG to take a stake in German company Huelsbeck
& Fuerst GmbH.
