LUXEMBOURG - The European Union said on Monday it was prepared to strengthen
the powers of its Europol police agency so it could more effectively combat
organised crime running rampant across its free borders.
[02] EU to agree employment clause
HAMBURG, Germany - Dutch Foreign Minister Hans van Mierlo said on Monday he
believed European Union members would agree on including a clause on
unemployment in the revision of the EU treaty to be agreed in Amsterdam in
June.

BRUSSELS - Europe's leaders are increasingly finding their careers tied to the
success or failure of monetary union with a number facing exile to the
political wilderness if events turn against them.

BRUSSELS - European Commissioners sought on Monday to hide deep divisions and
forge a united front in the battle to narrow a wide gap in living standards
between rich and poor EU members and prepare for expansion eastwards.

COPENHAGEN - A Danish court on Monday set May 26 as the date for the start of
a suit by 10 Danes challenging the legality of Denmark's European Union
membership.

BRUSSELS - European Union countries are expected to send their ambassadors
back to Iran this week, a fortnight after a German court found Tehran involved
in the murder of Kurdish opposition leaders.
[07] EU plays down Boeing subsidy
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Monday it had discussed aviation
subsidy rules with the United States but denied the talks had anything to do
with its anti-trust probe into merger plans by U.S. aircraft maker Boeing Co.

BRUSSELS - The EU Telecommunications Council scheduled for May 29 has been
postponed for lack of a substantive agenda, the Dutch EU presidency said on
Monday.

LUXEMBOURG - EU foreign ministers meeting begins at 0730 GMT (first of two
days); discussions focus on relations with Iran and Turkey, preparations by
Poland and Hungary to join the EU, inter-governmental conference on EU treaty
reforms.
THE HAGUE - Dutch Social and Economic Council holds forum on "The future of
the social dialogue at Community level" (second of two days). European
Commissioner Flynn gives closing address.
