[01] Agreement on justice system
LUXEMBOURG - The Consumer Affairs Council struck a common position on the
directive on injunctions for the protection of consumer interests after
difficult negotiations with Germany and Britain.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Commission will hold a round table on May 15 on the
consumer policy aspects of economic and monetary union, Consumer Affairs
Commissioner Emma Bonino said on Thursday.
[03] Consumer credit directive
LUXEMBOURG - Financial institutions in the European Union will have to apply a
common formula for calculating the cost of consumer credit under an agreement
reached by the EU's Consumer Affairs Council.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to show that Germany will be
unable to bring its 1997 budget deficit down to three percent of Gross
Domestic Product, a Portuguese newspaper reported.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said it had cleared a move by German
company Rheinbraun Brennstoff GmbH, a unit of electricity group RWE, to
acquire full control of Italian company Agenzia Carbonia Srl.

BRUSSELS - British Telecommunications Plc said it remained confident that the
European Commission would clear its merger with MCI Communications of the
United States.

BRUSSELS - Europe's single currency is likely to be the anchor for the
countries of central and eastern Europe that want to join the EU, but monetary
union is not seen as a barrier to the bloc's eastern expansion.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Parliament condemned China's decision to
replace Hong Kong's elected Legislative Council by a handpicked body ahead of
the return of the territory to Chinese rule on July 1.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Parliament criticised European Union
governments for failing to act together to tackle the crisis in Albania,
saying all countries in the 15-member bloc should shoulder the burden.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Parliament warned it would block a planned
trade and aid pact between the European Union and Belarus unless the Minsk
government undertook genuine political and economic reform.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament completed its first readings on the
Commission's Auto/Oil proposals, adopting dozens of amendments to the draft
directives on engine emissions and fuel quality.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Parliament added its voice to criticism of
the European Union for failing to support a United Nations resolution
attacking China for human rights violations.

GENEVA - The United States and the European Union said they saw good prospects
for a solution to their long-running row over EU grain tariffs.

BRUSSELS - Booming economic, cultural and political ties are likely to be
