[01] EU leaders hail peace record
ROME - European Union dignitaries toasted 40 years of integration and peace
among members on Tuesday and pledged not to allow the opportunities presented
by the fall of communism to slip by them.

ROME - France, Italy and Germany called on Tuesday for the creation of a
common European Union defence structure and policy, but faced fierce
opposition from Britain and the bloc's neutrals.

ROME - A row over defence and renewed doubt about the fate of Europe's planned
single currency cast a shadow on Tuesday over celebrations called to mark 40
years of European integration.

ROME - The European Union headed for another logjam in the inter-governmental
conference on Tuesday as France insisted that the number of European
commissioners should be cut by half.

ROME - Dutch Foreign Minister Hans van Mierlo said on Tuesday he would call
together his colleagues for a conclave on the inter-governmental conference on
April 6 and 7.

ROME - European foreign ministers, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the
Treaty of Rome that created the European Union, said on Tuesday the bloc's
single currency project marked another crucial watershed for Europe.

WASHINGTON - Negotiators from the United States and European Union are meeting
to work on a nettlesome meat inspection dispute that may disrupt transatlantic
trade from April 1.

BRUSSELS - European Commission officials said on Tuesday they had not yet seen
a proposal by Hochtief AG and Deutsche Bank AG to take joint control Holzmann
AG.

AMSTERDAM - KLM Royal Dutch Airlines said on Tuesday it was being investigated
by the European Commission over its practices against cut-price British
airline EasyJet.
[10] Belgian plan to protect jobs
BRUSSELS - The European Commission cleared on Tuesday a Belgian scheme to cut
social security charges on manual workers' wages after banning a previous
scheme which gave tax breaks to export-led companies only.
[11] EU seeks Kirch loan plan details
BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to ask the German authorities
shortly to provide information about a loan plan for Bavarian media mogul Leo
Kirch.
[12] UK's Birmingham airport control
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared a proposal
for a joint venture through which Birmingham International Airport will be
controlled by Natwest Ventures Ltd, AER Rianta International and seven
district councils of the British west midlands.
[13] EU readies aid effort to Albania
TIRANA - France flew 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Albania on Tuesday as
Europe prepared to launch a major relief effort for the stricken country
backed by troops to help it get through if necessary.
