    BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Friday threatened to take the United States before the World Trade Organisation over rules it said were classifying European goods as being made in China or India.

    [02] Spain suspends request for Renault

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday the Spanish government had suspended a request to be allowed to grant aid to a plant in Spain belonging to French carmaker Renault.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it was exploring ways of clamping down on a growing trend to relocate business operations in the European Union to take advantage of national and EU subsidies.

    PARIS - European Commission President Jacques Santer said on Sunday the French government could have intervened to prevent car-maker Renault from suddenly closing a big Belgian plant and laying off 3,100 workers.

    BRUSSELS - Each European Union country should be allowed just one member on the European Commission so the body does not become too unwieldy to operate in an EU of 20 or members, the Commission said on Friday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission issued comparable inflation data in preparation for the single currency on Friday indicating that most EU countries were on track to meet the EMU requirement on stable consumer prices.
