[01] Italy's bid for single currency
BRUSSELS - The European Union on Friday bolstered Italy's hopes of a timely
entry into a single currency by approving its controversial euro-tax, a one-
off measure aimed at bringing its public finances under control in 1997.

BRUSSELS - The sum total of the European Union's recent rulings on Italy's
1997 budget plans would leave its deficit at 3.1 percent of gross domestic
product, all things being equal.

BRUSSELS - Polish Prime Minister Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz visited NATO and the
European Union on Friday to push his country's case for membership of the two
Western clubs.

BRUSSELS - NATO and Russia appear to have entered a business-like dialogue
over their future relationship amid signs that Russia has resigned itself to
NATO's eastward enlargement but is determined to get the highest price it can.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had again warned Unilever
over its freezer cabinet rules in Ireland after the company's proposed changes
failed to open the market to fair competition.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared Telia AB and
Ericsson to take joint control of AU-System Group, a previously wholly owned
subsidiary of state-owned Telia.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had cleared a deal under
which Dutch company Vendex International NV acquires control of France's Bis
SA.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission on Friday approved the acquisition by
Archer-Daniels-Midland of Grace Cocoa Associates' activities.
[09] Lyonnais rescue to be sent to EU
PARIS - A French state rescue package to prepare state-controlled bank Credit
Lyonnais for privatisation will not be submitted for approval to the European
Commission until late March, a Finance Ministry source said on Friday.

LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice upholds a Court of First Instance
ruling which denied an individual the right to force the European Commission
to find a member state in violation of the EU Treaty.
[11] G7 summit to be held in Birmingham
LONDON - Britain will host the 1998 Group of Seven summit in the central
English city of Birmingham, Prime Minister John Major said on Saturday.

days); discussions focus on Mediterranean policy, Cyprus, South Africa,
trapping standards; 10th inter-governmental conference meets on the margin of

BRUSSELS - Palestinian President Yasser Arafat signs EU-Palestinian Authority
interim association accord with EU at 1130 GMT - followed by a news
